In recent years, the metaverse has developed and positioned itself as a significant space where it is possible to interact from and with anyone in the world, using important tools such as social networks, digital platforms, and artificial intelligence. In this sense, it offers great opportunities for personal development, but at the same time, there is a risk of falling into an excess of virtuality, generating multiple negative consequences. Therefore, education regarding its use is crucial. Given this situation, the question arises as to whether the metaverse can be seen, analyzed, and used as a replacement for the real world and all forms of social relationships, or as a tool to navigate it and improve the creation of more educated, conscious, and empathetic human beings in the face of today's diverse realities.

The metaverse offers unprecedented development opportunities, since, through it, people can access quality education from diverse spaces and in diverse ways; establish new social relationships from and with anyone in the world, relationships that would otherwise be impossible to reach; to work on what they are passionate about; to learn about the culture, processes of political, social, and economic transformations of other contexts thanks to spaces like social networks; or even to be the person that each person wants to be, since, through avatars, it is possible to be a more confident person and show themselves as they would like to be, but which is impossible in physical contexts.

However, over the years, it has become clear that some people fall into an excess of virtuality, generating significant negative impacts on modern societies, such as social isolation. For example, a growing number of young people and children prefer virtual reality video games to physical interaction, impacting the way human relationships develop, both now and in the future. Furthermore, it is safe to say that a large number of people of all ages, from children to the elderly, are increasingly dependent on digital technology, making it virtually impossible to manage daily life without using cell phones and social media to maintain communication with loved ones. All of this has a fundamental impact on mental health, with young people being the most vulnerable to these dynamics, as they often lack the necessary tools to cope effectively with the resulting problems.

For this reason, the European Union and educational institutions have a key role in promoting ethical, balanced, and people-centered technological development, fostering human values such as respect, prudence, empathy, confidentiality, generosity, inclusion, authenticity, and global solidarity to improve interrelationships within the metaverse. Furthermore, it is crucial to remember that human beings are social beings by nature, and that the metaverse is a tool for developing high-quality human beings in the physical world around them, a world that each person has the right and the obligation to improve.

In sum, technological innovation must advance alongside human values, not eliminate them. The metaverse is an essential tool for creating more educated, conscious, and empathetic human beings in the face of diverse realities and current conflicts; a tool that strengthens social connection rather than weakening it, leveraging the benefits the metaverse offers for personal and collective development, while always keeping in mind the goal of global improvement.
